So many books, so little time!

Unfortunately, my husband and I got a late start on our garden cleanup projects (after lunch). Although we braved a light rain, we finally surrendered to a downpour within the hour. That’s when I decided to touch base with my blogging buddies.

What I’d really like to do is to curl up and finish my current book: And the Dark Sacred Night, by Julia Glass, or even start my book club selection: Why I Left the Amish, by Saloma Miller Furlong. However, there are indoor chores that have fallen a bit behind during our recent push to tidy up our gardens, so I must be brief today.

A Doxie bookmark I made for my husband

I’m also reading Appearances, A Journey of Self-Discovery, which is a memoir by Renee Alter, whom I “met” in my online book-marketing challenge. We swapped files in exchange for reviews. That reminds me: I am looking for additional reviews of my memoir–even though it’s published already as a hardcover. For the simple price of your honest review, I can send you a .pdf file of Water's Edge: Growing Up in the Heart of a New England Village. Please email: VickieNewmanBooks.com.

 On my reading table

At the same online course, I discovered another memoir: Souled Out, by Viet Nam veteran Michael Orban. In fact, I’m trying to connect him with the right people at the Minneapolis Veteran’s Hospital, through my brother-in-law (a Physical Therapist there), to see if they are interested in buying Michael’s story. I hope you’ll offer up a little prayer with me that Michael increases his readership, with this lead! I can’t think of a more deserving author.

My tea is done and I must run….but only after I ask:

What’s on your reading table or wish list?

Hello Dear Vickie...It's been quite a rainy day, hasn't it? Yikers.

There is usually a smorgasbord of books on the little table near by bed. I take little reading nibbles out of each before sleep. Right now I'm reading "The Loveliest Home There Ever Was"----about the Mark Twain house in Hartford. Love to read about writers and their lives.

Started "Why I Left the Amish."

Also reading one by Sarah Breathnach who became a millionaire with her book, Simple Abundance, and then lost all the money through a messy divorce. The book I'm into is about her financial recovery, which one can apply to one's own life.

Isn't it a blessing to be able to read? What a gift!

Enjoyed your column. Your doggie bookmark is adorable! Susan

Hi Susan,

Sounds like some great books you're reading....thanks for sharing.
It is a blessing to read indeed.

Once the rain let up we went back to our gardens. We have good bones, just have to expose them! Today we are seeing some lovely results...fruits of our labor. Thank goodness because it was looking bleak for awhile! We weren't able to do much last year, so this feels good. I love working on an overcast day!

When things settle down outdoors, I'll get back to making more bookmarks. I have lots of fabric and love to make the front and back contrast. They really are cute.

Ok, must get something to eat....we worked like dogs!!!

You have an impressive reading list. Tea and books...ah, a great life! We actually had a sunny day here today!!! First in..well, long time. Tomorrow the rain returns but so enjoyed today even though there was work involved like cleaning inside while hubby mowed outside. Put my yard and deck back in order as everything under cover for storms...just had to see it right for ONE day anyway.

I just finished Maya Angelou's Me & Mom & Me...and The Wives of Los Alamos. Am about halfway mark in Joyce Maynard's Usual Rules. Standing in the reading queue are Unending Pilgrimage of Harold Pry and Goldfinich by Donna Tart for the September big read for book club.

Sounds like you've got things under control. ;-) We were wondering why we are so behind our gardening....then it dawned on us today. Last year was spent volunteering for the local college's Orchid Show and getting my memoir edited and published. No wonder the weeds took over! Never again will I spend as much time as a full-time job volunteering! Heck I've got books to read too!

Speaking of books, I must say that your reading list is impressive too! And I see you belong to a book club also...isn't it wonderful to be able to share ideas and reactions with others who read the same titles?

Only one book in your list is among those I've read: Goldfinch. I loved it....didn't want to put it down. You might want to schedule some extra reading time! I'll take a look at the other titles too, thanks for sharing them.

So many books, so little time speaks on my behalf too. And I love to learn about someone else who is reading multiple books at any one time.
Gardening, and books take precedence over house work I am a (little) ashamed to say.

Ah, EC, to live life is to enjoy it, right? We must allow ourselves these delights....the season is short and the house work will keep! If we didn't have guests coming Saturday, I'd not be laboring so intensely this week!

Hello from Spain: the bookmark is very cute. Nice design with dogs. I'm reading a book about the current policy that wrote the president of my country. Keep in touch

Hi Vickie-- it's nice to meet you also. Thank you for taking the time to visit me:)

Like you, I'd love to have more time to read-- for me, it's usually at night before I sleep for my reading time. I do enjoy audiobooks as well-- have one in my car and one on my iPod. I love sitting by the pool in the summer with my knitting and listening to a good book.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend--
Vicki

I just added Why I Left the Amish to my wish list...one of these days I would like to read your book but am not asking for it now because I have one started. And of course others waiting. But I love reading memoirs....

Hi Vicki!
I seem to have missed your note the day you posted it and am glad I circled back to catch it. Thanks so much for visiting. I once enjoyed audio books, especially for my trip from Philadelphia to the Western Massachusetts....until I bypassed an exit once! Not only do I not travel much by car but I find I must stay mindful of my route! You are blessed if you can enjoy audiobooks that way! But you are also wise to listen while you knit - I bet you're accomplished at that craft in order to do two things at once!

Hi Rose,
I'm so glad to hear from you! I better get going on reading Why I Left the Amish as our book club meets next Thursday! Yikes. Sounds like we're similar in having a stack of books to read! When you are ready let me know if you want more info on my memoir. It's my favorite genre too.

Hi Marta, I missed your comment the day you posted it, but I wanted you to know I am thrilled you visited, and I appreciate your comment. Your book sounds very interesting....write and let me know the title if you see this reply! Thanks, Vickie

Hi Vickie! I too am always reading loads of books at once, mainly nonfiction and something geared toward arts and/or the helping profession. Currently reading The Guardian of All Things: The Epic Story of Human Memory - amazing look at our our brains developed over time; Also Personal Effects: Dark Art - a really wild book that takes a look inside a criminal psychiatric facility from the view of an art therapist - it's interactive with all kinds of materials in the side flap! So cool. As far as memoirs go, I was wondering if you've read Jeanette Walls, The Glass Castle? It's harrowing, intense, vivid but worth it through to the end.Just found out they are filming it for a movie, so if you get a chance, get it! Anyway, congrats on this wonderful blog! Keep at it! LOVE the garden pics too. And yes, please feel free to enter me into your birthday sweepstakes, lol! Marney

Hi Marney, So happy for your visit! OMG I'm adding both of your current reads to my wish list....and YES, Jeannette Walls is one of my favorite authors. "Glass Castle" is one of those memoirs that stays with you, isn't it?

Please could you click the "follow" button on my blog to be officially entered in my memoir drawing? Good luck!

Warmly,

Vickie
